This Day

(2-minute read)

I have this day. In walking with the Lord, today is all we can clearly see. We know people by remembering the past, but the Lord looks at us and can plainly see who we are.

One night many years ago, I had a dream. The Lord spoke to me in the dream, saying, “Go through the door into what I’m doing.” The first door I opened was to a closet. I looked around the room, and there was a tiny door, unlike the other doors. In my dream, the Lord said, “It’s through there.”

I got down on my hands and knees and tried to crawl through the door. I didn’t fit. I suddenly realized I was wearing a full backpack. And the Lord said, “Take that off; it won’t fit through.” After removing the backpack, I tried to get through the door again but couldn’t. I had to remove the things from my pockets, some good and some bad. Again I wouldn’t fit through. Lastly, I saw my hands holding all they could carry. I looked at what I was holding, and the Lord said, “Those are things I have given you. You called them your Nuggets from the Lord.” I said, “Lord, I can’t. Those are from you.” The Lord said, “Put them down, or you can’t go through.”

I opened my hands and let everything fall to the floor and then was able to crawl through the tiny door. Reaching the other side, I stood up, and the first thing I saw was an enormous pile of things labeled Nuggets from the Lord. Behind that, I saw piles of other good things from the Lord, and I then woke up.

After all these years, I’ve discovered this is what it’s like to walk with the Lord. I have one day, this day, and I must lay down the past, even the good past. I have this day to deal with the current things in my life that are not pleasing to the Lord. Other people may have had control over some of my circumstances, but I am the one responsible for who I am. I have this day to follow the Lord and become the person he planned for me to be.

I have this day to put off the shackles of the past, lay down the person I once was, gather the new nuggets, and go on new adventures. Hello, morning; let’s begin.

Oh my how hard it is to lay it all down, but that’s what God wants us to do. This is really powerful.

  2. Your post reminds me of the song, “One Day At a Time.” Sometimes I think it should be, Moment by Moment.

    1. I struggle to live one day at a time, but it appears to be what the Lord wants.

  3. Thank you for sharing your dream with us. I have had dreams from the Lord, but struggle with sharing them. Thank you for encouraging me. I love the part in your dream of going on your hands and knees with nothing on your back, in your pockets, or anywhere else only to find that “through the door” God has so many more for you. I’ve lived that truth, but I’m a slow learner and it’s not been easy for me to let go of it all. Thank you for the reminder that it’s truly the best way to live with Jesus. Happy Thanksgiving!

  4. Hey, Don. Thanks for liking one of my short stories on my blog. I like you am trying to enter that tiny door. But it is a challenge. I think Alice was trying to do the same thing but she went down the rabbit hole. Maybe we can journey down that rabbit hole together.

    1. Thank you, Debbie. Our relationship with the Lord is very intimate and personal, which can make it more challenging to share. Comments like yours are very encouraging.

      1. Agree! I have another blog where I tried to make it just my personal and intimate relationship with Jesus. This blog is a joint effort with my husband. He’s definitely quieter about his walk!

      3. It’s a bit neglected! I also used it in a WordPress blogging class – praying it might be used to help some who were lost to find our Lord. Somehow!

  6. What a powerful dream! I was intrigued, reading it, as I has one so similar to it. I had to take a backpack off to fit through a tiny door too. The only variation is that I had to squeeze through at an unusual angle as well. Thank You Father for speaking to us!

  7. Don, I used to be bothered by the verse that says it’s easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to get to heaven. I worried about that, knowing that my family was rich by most standards in the world. Then someone told me about a gate in the wall around Jerusalem that was the only way to get in at night when all other gates were shut. It was called “the needle’s eye,” and it was so small that a camel had to be completely unloaded and down on its knees to pass through. That spoke to me about being willing to let go of our riches and humble ourselves to get to heaven. – It’s not impossible, but we can’t enter holding onto our pride and our earthly “stuff.”

  8. Thank you for sharing, it reminds me of the narrow gate in Matthew 7, and taking up our cross and following Him daily.
