Memory

“Does anyone know what I went to the kitchen to get?”

Oh, the joys of senior moments. My memory is not what it used to be. I decided to get tested to ensure it was age and not something more serious. The doctor said I was fine.

He said, “In your early 20s, when you wanted to run up a set of stairs, you could take them two or three steps at a time. You can’t do that now. Your body is much slower, and you must take one step at a time. Your brain has aged along with your legs. When you try to remember something, it takes longer for your brain to find that memory. As long as you don’t get frustrated, it’ll come to you.”

After seeing what it’s done to others, the possibility of Alzheimer’s and losing my memory bothers me. I couldn’t help but wonder, if I got Alzheimer’s, what would my relationship with the Lord be like? The answer was apparent as soon as I asked the Lord the question. I remember when my children were small, and we would cross a street, they thought they were holding my hand, but in reality I was holding theirs. It’s like that with the Lord; we think we’re holding on to him, but in fact, it’s him holding on to us. Since I asked Jesus to be my Lord and Savior, he held on to me and protected me even when I didn’t know of the danger. If my body or mind fails me, I trust the Lord to hold me close.

  1. What a beautiful thought about the Lord holding us! It’s so true, but how often do we give it a thought?

  5. Don, this is such a comforting post. I appreciate the information your doctor shared and what you’ve reiterated.

I had a grandparent who had Alzheimer’s. Like you, I saw my physician because I was concerned. He believed I was experiencing normal aging. It can be unsettling when we experience the “senior” moments. I’ll remember to think about God holding my hand regardless of my mental status.

  17. That is so beautiful and reassuring, Don. I suffer from mental illness, but I trust that the Lord will be patient with me when I don’t fully understand things or when I lose the plot, which happens regularly! Thankfully, He knows our hearts no matter what condition may be.

  23. That imagery of God holding onto us is SO beautiful. It brings to mind what I was studying over the last week. In a study note from the NET Bible, it pointed out that “hand” is a symbol of power throughout the Scriptures. I sensed Holy Spirit connecting that truth for me with the beautiful words in John 10 that He has us in His hand and nothing/no one can take us from there. He holds us in His power! Nothing can get us out of such a powerful grip.

  24. “Nothing can separate us from the love of God . . . .” Your wise words remind me of that old hymn whose chorus ends, “For my Savior loves me so/He will hold me fast.”

    1. Early in our Christianity, we think so much about having the proper response to the Lord that it is easy to forget that he is far better at giving a loving response to us.
