The Lord and News

You wouldn’t think I would still be learning my weaknesses and how to think at my age. For some months, I believe the Lord has led me away from politics. For quite some time now, my only involvement had been to vote and discuss politics with friends. The Lord apparently wants to show me some things, but I am not yet ready to understand them.

When people are in a cult, they don’t know they’re in a cult. The cult tells them the only approved sources of information and how to understand it. When they hear some truth from an outsider, they are either told or assume it’s from the devil. Since the Lord is telling me to step away, I suppose something keeps me from fully walking with the Lord.

It turns out this is a lot harder than I thought it would be. There’s more than one icon on my phone I can push, and it will tell me of all the political infighting going on. It feels like there’s some sort of addiction there, a little bit like when I was a teenager and had a porn magazine hidden under my mattress.

I haven’t been a part of a political party in years. My liberal friends believe I’m conservative, and my conservative friends think I’m liberal. I’ve discovered the truth in the fortune cookie proverb: The man who stands in the middle of the road gets hit by cars going in both directions.

Politics and walking with the Lord work on two completely different systems. If I must choose one because of my weaknesses, I pick the Lord.

  1. You have picked wisely, Don Thank you for sharing thoughts that many of us are battling, as well. 🙂

  3. Well said. The struggle to stay out of the mud while attempting to be thoughtful about the choices I will make is not an easy one. I try to read enough to be informed and to stay away from the echo chambers. Yet, no matter what, God is Sovereign over everything.

  4. I love how you’ve phrased this Don. “My liberal friends believe I’m conservative, and my conservative friends think I’m liberal.” Yes, I think that describes me, feel like there are cults everywhere you look now. Ugh. 😣

  5. I know several people who have voice similar thoughts Don. You are definitely not alone. We have not had TV service for quite some time. That helps. We pray a lot more, even for perceived enemies. They are people with an eternity.

    1. Thank you, Gary. I think I used to pray for politicians more than I do now, but I watch a lot less news now and don’t think of them as often.

  6. What a relief to see this post is for me, Don. I refuse to jump on the political bandwagons in the Christian realm. And to say anything contrary or “against” those bandwagons, as you are seeing, is making some people call that person “of the devil” or “misinformed” or “trying to cause trouble and confusion, ‘and confusion is of the devil’ “. Confusion can be caused by just not knowing what was said prior to walking into a room and into the middle of a conversation that had been going on already, prior to that person walking into the room. Not of the devil at all, but caused by ignorance.

So, what is the cure for confusion in that scenario? Education and information AND an open enough mind to accept that said information or at least consider that it may be true.

More power to ya as our Loving Father instructs and teaches us how to not conform to this world but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Welcome to the club. Susan.

    1. I can’t speak of the experience of others, only that the Lord has called me apart from politics so that I might be able to hear him more clearly. There seems to be something I am unable to hear and understand until I am free of it. From other comments, I suspect I may not be alone.

Ditto, Don. Thanks for this excellent reminder. Sometimes we have to stop paying attention to them, and that can mean not even ignoring them. Great goal going into next year: just a focus on the things above.

  10. All true christians have the fight of afflictions, and making the decision to let go of the way of life we become so accustomed to. Our life is far richer and more peaceful in the Lord than the world could ever offer. Good to see you have chose the Lord. (Hebrews 10:31-39).
    Many Blessings.

  11. Great post, Don. And we’re in the same boat: “My liberal friends believe I’m conservative, and my conservative friends think I’m liberal.”

I haven’t watched the news in ages. I know Jesus. I know how this ends. I’m good.

  13. What a timely message, Don. I received my notice for the upcoming presidential election. I am unsure I am still a Democrat and not sure I still want to be. Definitely not a Republican. My political views are not set in stone. I pray as I go nowadays. I am not sure I want to vote in this upcoming election.

  14. The answer is always in scripture:

    2 Timothy 2:4 (KJV)
4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.
    God bless
