Genuine

Untitled painting by Jo White

(2-minute read)

I discovered early in my work career that I needed to motivate myself. Often, I would decide something I wanted to do differently but just get caught up in the day’s routine and forget about the change I wanted to make. I started writing little notes and leaving them for myself. I’ve discovered that I need this same approach in the things of the Lord. I’ll have good intentions, but the business of the day makes me fall back into my routine.

Recently, my sister-in-law Cindy sent my wife a photograph she took from her patio. My wife, Jo, liked how the sky reflected on the water. She wanted to paint something similar and experiment with a slightly different painting style. When I first looked at it, I thought I liked the painting and could use it to remind me each day to reflect the Lord. I quickly realized that water is not calm during a storm and doesn’t reflect the sky. Even water can live at peace as long as it’s undisturbed. To live in peace during a storm is an unexpected wonder. On the other hand, the trees are just what the Lord intended them to be. They may sway or bend during a storm, and their leaves get ruffled, but they can take a lot.

Like the trees standing by the water, I want to grow up to be what the Lord intended me to be, and when trouble comes, not be changed by it. When the Lord created me, he made me the genuine person I was to be, but through selfishness, I let in influences that made me different. I want to be the person God wanted me to be. The genuine person God wanted me to be is better than I am, and I want to be that better person. When I pass the painting each morning, before I know what storms the day may bring, I look at it and think, be genuine today.

  3. I like this post a lot. I have let my experiences deter me from the true and genuine calling God had for me. Being who God called me to be is important because I am the only me, no matter what look-a-like has come into play. We work so hard at trying to be unique, different, etc. and we already are. God made us that way. How cool is that! Took me quite a while to figure it out.

  5. “The word “genuine” in its essence refers to authenticity, purity, and originality. When we talk about “genuine” in the Bible, we are referring to something that is authentic and true, free from counterfeiting or hypocrisy. The Bible exhorts us to seek purity of heart, sincerity in words, and authenticity in our actions.”

    Like natural water, I think.

“He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.”

  6. This is so beautiful and meaningful. We should all want to be better, and I can see how that beautiful painting could inspire that. That painting with those coconut trees actually reminds me of home. Another good one by Jo.

  8. Jo has painted a dynamic image using the rich colors of nature. It’s wonderful you have chosen to use it as a “teleprompter” to remind you to reflect on the Lord. 🙂

    1. Thank you, Nancy. Like every family with an artist, we decorate our home with paintings that didn’t sell. We don’t need a bigger house; we need one with more walls. We have a growing number of paintings that I’ve asked her not to sell.

  9. I think my fav miracle is the calming of the waters. Can you imagine it… you’re out in the middle of this huge lake at night and the waves have risen, the wind is whistling down through the mountain passes… the boat’s filling with water… you wake up your leader/friend in panic…He stands… ”Peace! Be still!” It’s like the plug is pulled, everything instantly quiets, He goes back to unconcerned sleep… you look at your friends: “..who is this that even the winds and sea obey Him?” 😎

    1. Thank you. Jo is currently working on her third painting in that series. She was impressed by the style of a group of black men who couldn’t find jobs after WW2 and became artists to support their families. They were called The Florida Highwaymen because they sold art out of the trunks of their cars.

      1. Similarly,The WPA Art Project in the 1930s was started to preserve the skills of professional artists. They are an industrious group. ⭐️

  13. A wonderful painting Don. I have been through some very wild storms on wilderness adventures…sometimes the eye of the storm finds us and is perfectly calm…Great reflections happen for a brief period before getting slammed with the backside of the storm…

    1. Thank you, Gary. As a kid, I remember being in the eye of a hurricane. It was such a strange feeling.

    2. I once experienced a hurricane on a ship. For their small boat, it was even worse than I experienced. I would never wish to experience it again. You are right, pretty amazing miracle.

We may sway and be ruffled, but with our roots deeply planted in Him, we remain unshaken at our core. Like you, I also want to grow into the person God created me to be, fully reflecting His love and grace, no matter what the day brings.

    1. Sounds like we are in this together. I plan to buckle my seatbelt because I don’t know where the Lord may take us on that road (new mataphor 😃) we will walk with him.
