Do Feelings Have Value?

Painting by Jo White

My wife, Jo, is experimenting with a series of paintings, trying to create a feeling without being abstract. She originally had a Pelican in the painting, but it didn’t have the right feeling. So, she changed it to the Pelican-ish bird, which doesn’t actually exist in nature. In her quest to be used by the Lord, she felt she needed to learn to paint with emotion and story.

This begs the question, do feelings have real value? The universe is built on scientific principles. If artificial intelligence (AI) ever takes over the world, feelings will have no value. Feelings exist because God is love, and he decided to make humans in his image. In a world without love, no emotion has value.

It would never create something with free will in an AI-controlled world. Despite all the problems it causes, free will is necessary to have love.

When I first learned about the Lord and all he had done for us, I sometimes wondered, do I have enough faith to go to heaven? Although religion or theology teaches it, I learned through experience that God is love. It hit me one day that I had given myself to the Lord, and because he is love, he can be trusted. Suddenly, everything was simple. It no longer depended on me but relied on him. Feelings do have value, God made it so.

First of all, your wife’s painting is absolutely beautiful. What a wonderful pairing: one of you creating art with such skill, while the other shares the word of God through study, teaching, and testimonies. Your insight into God’s nature as love and its impact on the value of feelings is truly powerful.

God Bless You both, today and always.

  8. Hi Don, I have enjoyed seeing Jo Ann paintings. I really love seeing all the color too.

In answer to your question about feelings I would say all feelings have value. It is what we do with them that matters most. Over the last few years I have learned so much about feelings because I received a certification in Emotional Intelligence. Learning about even the difficult emotions was healing for me. Each emotion, even anger, serves a purpose. They each give us information about what is important to us.

I know Jesus showed us a full range of emotions while living a perfect example for us. I am thankful He did not hold back in the temple when He turned over tables, or when He asked if this cup might pass. Yet, in each situation He chose God’s will.

Thank you for writing and also thank you to Jo Ann(Jo) for her beautiful work.

  9. Thank you for this reminder and validation. Your last paragraph sums up all that I have experienced and been through looking after my 98 year old father who passed away in May of this year….

    1. I’m so sorry for your loss. We miss our loved ones who have gone on to be with the Lord, even though we know they are better off now. We lost our daughter two and a half years ago and still miss her more than I thought was even possible.

  10. It really is simple. The more I lean into who our God is, the less I feel compelled to dive into a million books on theology and doctrine. And honestly, I think that’s the point as He sanctifies us.

And Jo, I like your paintings! Keep painting for our Lord! 🙂

  13. Before I realized that picture was something your wife painted, I thought, “oooh what a pretty picture!” Your wife is very talented! And thank you for this post. As my family has been walking through some difficulties lately, I have been thinking about emotions. And really I have been thinking that emotions aren’t real. Just because I feel a certain way, doesn’t mean that my feelings are reflecting truth. So in a way, I have been negating my emotions. Your post has helped me to look at things from a better perspective. And I really appreciate your thoughts on God’s love and how that brings value to our emotions.

    1. Thank you, Bridget. All of our emotions have value; Jesus wept. Sadness can come from love and missing someone. We are more than computers, robots, or enslaved people. I’m glad you like my wife’s painting. She took up art at 69 and is still experimenting and trying to find her style.
