Unexpected Kindness

(One-minute read)

As old as I am, I’m surprised I still find amazing things about the Lord that I’d never noticed. For instance, every major religion has some form of “love for your neighbor as yourself.” How they interpret that meaning varies greatly between religions and even within those religions.

In Judaism, during the 1st century, the Essene sect believed that their neighbor was someone who was an Essene. So, they taught that you should love other Essenes and consider everyone else, including other Jews, your enemy. The Pharisees and Sadducees believed their neighbors were Jews and that all non-Jews were their enemies. During the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus did not tell anyone that their doctrine was wrong. He simply said to love your enemies.

In my relationship with the Lord, I don’t remember a time that the Lord has ever told me I was wrong. He simply leads me to the truth, and then I find myself saying, “Oh, I was wrong.” It wasn’t until recently that I recognized this unexpected kindness of the Lord to all of us.

  1. So true Don. I have not heard “wrong way” even tho I was going the wrong way. Instead I often hear “this way”.

    1. He is instructive like a parent but surprisingly gentle. Lately, I have become more aware of things in his nature that I had overlooked in the past.

    2. I have had the experience of God telling me that I was going the wrong way, but it wasn’t stern or unloving- it was more like a plea to save myself a lot of trouble.

I’ve also had the experience of God not giving me any advice when I asked and just saying, “what do YOU want to do?”I remember being shocked that God was giving me so much choice!

  9. So true. Truly humble people can be nudged into being introspective and learning they were wrong. Many need the zapper to get our attention. Once I was literally bitten by a dog on my butt when I wasn’t doing something I was led clearly to do. Never forgetting my wrong frame of mind and who I wasn’t putting first.
