Become One of Us

(2-minute read)

I learned many years ago that my identity, what I think of myself, significantly affects my life, whether I succeed or fail at what I’m trying to do. When I identify with a condition, thought, or organization, it subconsciously influences me. Recently, I’ve been struggling with a health issue and realized that the severe limitations that it puts on my life have made it an ever-increasing part of my personal identity. There was this gnawing feeling within me that this did not please the Lord.

“Lord, I want my life. I want the one you designed for me, not the one controlled by earthly circumstance. I ask for wisdom, Lord. Tell me what to do.”

When the answer came, it was, “Lay down politics.” It surprised me, but it was not the first time I had prayed for an answer and the Lord had asked me to do something that seemed completely unconnected. In fact, it has happened many times, and each time I followed it, my original problem resolved itself.

First-century Jews loved to talk about the politics between the Jewish sects and their hatred of Roman rule. They tried to get Jesus to discuss this, but the closest they came was when Jesus said, “Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and unto God the things that are God’s.” Jesus loved the Jews, but Rome had temporary rulership over a temporary situation. Jesus was there on behalf of the eternal and spoke to them of the Kingdom of God.

My years of working either directly or indirectly for the government were over. As a voter, I am listed as “no party.” I no longer campaign or donate to any candidate. I only vote. For the last several years, I have attempted to avoid conversations about politics outside the family, but I am often unsuccessful. When I speak of politics, it’s all just noise that produces no results.

The Lord seems to be saying, “Knock off the noise.” Politics is acidic to my soul, and it’s a constant distraction. To do this, I may need to stop reading the news each morning until I can adjust to this new direction.

Throughout history, the cry of politicians, kings, and dictators has been, “I’ll give you what you want if you become one of us.” They said they wouldn’t throw Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego into the furnace if they would become one of them. They said it to Christians in Rome when they were being publicly killed. And politicians are saying it today in every country of the world.

I’m sure others are much stronger than I am, but this instruction to lay down politics for me was much like someone telling an alcoholic not to go to a bar or telling a compulsive gambler not to go to a casino. The Lord wants my identity to be in him, and I pray that the Lord fulfill that in me.

  1. The Lord has led me in the same way, Don. I don’t watch the news, use social media, and just like you, only pray then vote. That’s it.

The more we fall into the trap of what divides us, the less we’re abiding in Christ.

  2. Great post Don! From my experience, politicians (and some relatives) are like uranium and we must limit our exposure. Thanks for these excellent reminders.

  4. I have been struggling with this too. Thank you for your wisdom. I have been contemplating a reading we had not that long ago about a tax that Jesus had to pay. He told Peter to fish and when he got the fish there would be a coin in it that would pay for both of them. I kind of got the feeling that he was making fun of the Romans and just barely putting up with their nonsense! Praying for your health too!!!!!

  5. Don, I had the impression that your identity was already in Christ. Maybe politics kept you from being “fully” in Christ. Anyway, your reflections about this subject are thought-provoking. Thank you. 🙂

    1. Thank you, Nancy. I’m still working on that “fully.” Every time I think I’m doing really well in the Lord, he shows me a little more of who I really am.

  9. A great read, Don. I got the same message about five years ago. I quit Facebook and stopped watching the news for the most part. Especially the national news. We still watch a little bit of the local news which doesn’t delve too much into politics. If something of some great magnitude happens I’m sure we will hear about it outside of the nightly news. It’s been very freeing.

  11. Love this post, Don. I am confident that God would not ask you to do something He wouldn’t equip you to do. It may be challenging, but worth being obedient. I still get excited that the privilege of having my own relationship with Him is that He can speak directly to my soul. What a blessing! Be encouraged. Thank you for sharing

  12. Amen Don, good prayerful listen and adjustment. I’ve practiced a severely limited news and politics existence for years. I only have so much compassion and passion bandwidth and for me to use it up outside the serving lane that God has put me in seemed distracting and worldly. I get kidded by my friends about this but I’m enjoying the peace. Everyone is different though and many people are called to serve through politics.

    1. Thanks, Bob. I thought I was only reading the news for about 15 minutes in the morning, but it must have been longer, as I now have a great deal more time.

Amen 🙏. Letting go and letting God lead isn’t always easy, but it’s the only way to find true peace. Our identity belongs to Him alone. 🙏

  14. This really resonates with me, the laying down of something which, to me, seems totally unrelated. The Lord has asked me to lay down several things lately. I’m excited to see how He uses my relinquished things for His glory. Great post! Thank you for sharing.

  17. Thought-provoking, Don. I find myself getting caught up in politics as well. I need to prayerfully consider my own path. I hope your original concern was addressed by following this direction.

    1. Thank you, Belinda. However, he didn’t say he would heal me. It was just what he asked me to do when I prayed. I made the assumption, but it was the right thing at the right time. Politics is acidic to my soul and sends my life in the wrong direction.

  18. The statement that politics is acidic to my soul rang a note for me. It’s been a couple of years since I laid down politics, I believe I called it poisonous. Either way, I have been astonished how much easier it is to focus on discipleship and reflecting Christ.

Praying that the Lord directs your path in all you do.

    1. Thank you so much, David. I have found it difficult to stop reading the news. It’s almost like an addiction. I know I don’t have to do that long-term, but taking a break from the news for a little while will help me accomplish what the Lord has asked of me. The kingdom of God is more important than any other kingdom.

  20. Amen, Don! My husband has also faced health challenges this year. I believe the Lord has us in a place of stillness in the moment, to rest in preparation for the next chapter of our lives. Perhaps He’s preparing us all for what’s next on the horizon. May He be glorified!
