Doubts

(1-minute read)

On occasion, I have doubts. I want to be a man of faith, but doubts occasionally come. I hate the way they feel. It seems so wrong. Doubt by itself is not a sin. In the case of doubting Thomas, Jesus did not rebuke Thomas. Thomas didn’t repent because Thomas wanted to believe. As terrible as it feels, doubt is helpful in our walk with the Lord.

I used to have a job where I traveled a great deal. As it turned out, my wife wanted a relationship that was more than me putting money in the bank or giving gifts. She wanted a relationship where we shared our lives with each other. I guess she got that idea from the Lord; he seems to feel the same way. Just as we replenish the oxygen in our body by breathing, we replenish our faith, hope, and love by spending time with the Lord. The Lord doesn’t need us to do things for him; he wants us to do things with him.

  1. Yep, especially that last line. I finished something God asked me to do, and I’ve been sitting in a pool of doubt. These words are a strong reminder of the overarching point of everything. Thank you, Don!

    1. I’m still pondering that last. I’m one of those that wants to do things even before I know God wants them done, and then I’m disappointed in the results.

  7. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings about occasional doubts. The evil one is always trying to usurp our love for God. Your faith continues to serve you well, Don.

  11. So Thomas is the discipline I most identify with, so I love that you used him as your example. There is a verse tucked away and not often preached about that leapt out at me one day that even after the disciples had all of these experiences with Jesus “still they doubted.” It wasn’t just Thomas, and that has always reassured me. A future blog post when I have the time.

Also, I prayed for you yesterday. I was so overwhelmed by your kindness and suggesting that we pray for each other on your last post that I was too speechless to respond until now.

    1. Thank you, Stacey. Sometimes, you see people who seem to be on the same spiritual track, although in totally different circumstances.

  13. I’ve never thought of Doubt like this… What an interesting perspective! I think our doubt can sometimes be the open door to bring us closer to the Father..
